Automobile accidents unfortunately occur far too often, especially in New York City and the surrounding boroughs because of the number of people and cars on the road. Automobile accidents are often caused by another driver’s negligence or reckless conduct, often by speeding or by not paying attention to the road. While you can take certain precautions to minimize the risk of car accidents, you cannot entirely eliminate the dangers posed by other drivers who fail to obey the rules of the road.

A recent auto accident in Brooklyn highlights the unexpected nature of these car accidents and the tragic effects car accidents can have.

Catastrophic Brooklyn car crash between two minivans

Last month, a Toyota Sienna, which was speeding north on McDonald Avenue between Avenue M and Bay Parkway around 2:00 a.m., hit the back of a minivan. The impact caused the Toyota to smash into a train track support-beam, and the collision with the elevated train track pillar caused the two men in the front seat to be thrown through the minivan’s windshield.

Responding emergency officials rushed the two men, 23 and 25 years old, to Maimonides Medical Center where they were in critical condition. There were also three passengers in the back of Toyota. These three passengers suffered injuries, but remained in stable condition at the hospital.

Fortunately, the minivan that was rear-ended suffered only damage to the car. None of the three passengers in the car were injured.

Common causes of car accidents

Automobile accidents can occur for a variety of reasons, ranging from bad weather to a car malfunctioning to human error. Some common causes of car accidents include:

● Distracted drivers, such as talking on a cell phone, texting, or e-mailing while driving.
● Drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every day, nearly 30 people in the United States die from car crashes involving drivers who are alcohol-impaired.
Young drivers (15-24), who lack experience and fail to follow the rules of the road, are a significant cause of car accidents in the United States.
