The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracks injuries in the U.S. and has found that injuries and violence are the leading causes of death in the nation for individuals ages 1 to 44 when compared to other leading causes of death. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014 it is estimated that almost 3 million individuals were hospitalized due to injuries. Across our great nation, approximately 94 percent of employees – about 140 million workers – are covered by workers’ compensation insurance. Twenty-six-year-old Pedro Bacillo who was working on the interior of a midtown Manhattan building tragically died when the five-story townhome crumbled with him and other workers still inside, according to a recent ABC News report. It took three hours for emergency crews to dig out one other worker while 17 were able to escape uninjured. Investigators are looking into what caused the collapse, which occurred on a construction site that had been taking adjacent buildings down – floor by floor – for several months prior to the disastrous accident. An SUV spun out-of-control near the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn one recent morning, rear-ending an Uber car. After taking off into oncoming traffic, the vehicle fatally hit a cyclist, according to an NY Daily News report. Witnesses reported that the driver was going approximately 50 miles per hour, causing the cyclist to go up several feet in the air as a result of the head-on impact. After hitting the cyclist, the SUV slammed into the side of another car and then crashed into a steel pole. Some witnesses believe the driver was trying to flee the scene after hitting the Uber car. Tackled by undercover law enforcement, slammed on the ground, handcuffed and detained – this was not the experience former tennis star James Blake was expecting when he was en route to attend a U.S. Open event in Flushing. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened, according to a recent Time Magazine report. Mistaken for an identity theft suspect, 35-year-old Blake reports not one of the plain-clothed Caucasian officers identified themselves when they tackled him in front of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Midtown. A doctor working out of Bayfront Health Port Charlotte hospital has lost a recent medical malpractice lawsuit, according to a Wink News report. Earlier this year, a jury found Dr. Michael Coffey 70 percent responsible for a 2010 birth that resulted in a severe brain injury. The jury found the hospital, which was named Peace River Regional at the time of the incident, 30 percent responsible. The mother of the child alleges she visited Dr. Coffey, who is still on staff at the hospital, during her pregnancy looking for treatment because of decreased fetal movement as well as other concerns. Two patient deaths at a UCLA hospital have been linked to two medical scopes that still carried deadly bacteria, despite being properly disinfected, according to a recent CNN News report. Seven hospital patients have been infected with the superbug, known as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (“CRE”), at the hospital including the most recent deaths. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, CRE can kill up to half of the patients who contract this deadly bacterium.

The ranking of hospitals is beneficial to the consumer public, according to a recent U.S. News & World report. With just under 100,000 patients admitted to U.S. hospitals on a daily basis, it is important to know how the facility you may be visiting compares to others. Hospitals are ranked nationally and regionally, according to the report. The reason why hospitals are ranked is because almost two million people annually need the services of inpatient hospital care for a number of medical conditions that, when treated, may pose an increased risk of harm or even death. How the Hospitals Ranked
The rankings were based on 16 specialties in which hospital care is given and included:

• Diabetes and endocrinology;

• Gastroenterology and GI surgery;

• Geriatrics;
• Nephrology;
• Neurology and neurosurgery;
• Orthopedics;

• Rheumatology.
The first 12 specialties were rated on data, while the last four were ranked solely based on reputation. A total of 4,716 facilities were analyzed using this information. The hospitals that were ranked regionally listed the facilities that were best in states and major metropolitan areas. The national rankings found that only 137 U.S. hospitals performed well enough to be nationally ranked in at least one specialty; 220 were found to be high performing in one or more specialty; and only 15 qualified for an honor roll ranking. The factors considered included reputation with specialists, patient survival rate, patient safety, and other care-related indicators.

An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the South Bronx has left a dozen dead since the pandemic began in July, according to a recent USA Today news report. Mayor Bill De Blasio claimed the plague was on the decline, particularly since no new cases had been recorded. More than 100 total cases of Legionnaires’ disease were reported, with over 75 people hospitalized but released. City health authorities reported all of the deaths in the South Bronx were of people with preexisting health conditions. A 22-year-old man died at a construction site in New York’s Meatpacking District earlier this spring, according to a DNAInfo article. The young construction worker was part of a crew digging below the foundation of the building on the site to reinforce its support. According to reports, as he tried to climb out of the ditch, dirt fell on him and he was buried up to his neck. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. Continue reading
