Dangerous Driving Speeds in Brooklyn and the Bronx

Posted on August 23, 2013 by

A 23-year-old driver recently died after crashing his BMW while speeding in Brooklyn. According to a witness, the man was going 70 or 80 miles an hour, when he hit a dip in the road and his car buckled and spun out of control. The car hit anything in its path, including a van it crushed that was parked on the street. This type of accident is unfortunately not that uncommon in Brooklyn or the Bronx.

A recent study revealed that an astonishing 88% of Brooklyn  drivers regularly ignore the city’s 30-mph posted speed limit and a third of those do so in excess of 10-mph over the posted limit.  As a result, Kings and Bronx County traffic conditions led to the highest fatality numbers in the city, and traffic related injuries account for 13% of total injuries within the entire Empire State. If you’ve been in an accident in Brooklyn or the Bronx, contact a knowledgeable New York auto accident attorney.

Landlord negligence & building code enforcement: a matter of life or death

The tragic death of a 35-year-old woman, who fell to her death while leaning or sitting on an East 57th St. apt balcony, recently could have been prevented if the balcony had been “up to code”. In other words, the building owners (landlords) who had been cited for violations previously could have prevented this death if they had promptly corrected the violations. Instead, a young woman has left a heart broken family and devastated friends behind to mourn her unnecessary loss.

Every balcony at the prewar building on East 57th Street, including the one where the young advertising executive sat, was “deemed defective or not up to code,” a law-enforcement source said. “They weren’t strong enough to hold her up,” said another law-enforcement source. “All of the apartment balconies were defective or not up to code.” Continue reading

Of the many types of accidents that a person can be involved in, by far the most likely is a car accident. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, millions of car accidents happen annually, with around 10.8 million occurring in 2009. In 2010, 32,885 caused fatalities. 32% involved drunk driving, 31% involved speeding, 16 % were caused by “distractions” & 11% by bad weather. 52 % were driver fatalities & 20 % were passenger fatalities.

While some of these car accidents were the result of uncontrollable factors, such as inclement weather, most were  automobile accidents that occurred  due to the negligence or reckless actions of other drivers. Sadly, many reckless and negligent actions  of the other parties cause innocent people to be injured or die in serious auto accidents. Continue reading
