Train on a railroad track next to a city.

Earlier this month, an accident in New York’s Westchester County involving an SUV and commuter train killed six people. During the evening commuting rush hour, a northbound Metro-North Railroad train hit a car stopped on the tracks at Commerce Street in Valhalla, which is about 28 miles north of midtown Manhattan.

The crash happened after the gates at the train crossing came down on top of a SUV stopped on the tracks. A Metro Transit Authority official said, “the driver got out to look at the rear of the vehicle, drove forward and was struck.” The train had been traveling 58 miles per hour when it saw the SUV and applied the emergency brake. The speed limit is 60 miles per hour.

Some of the most dangerous hazards at construction sites include scaffolding, excavations, ladders, falling objects, and electrical wiring. Construction sites present precarious situations and even the most innocuous objects can be deadly.

Brooklyn Landlord Pleaded Guilty To Homicide in Building Fire that Killed Five

Front view of an apartment building.

Last year, the landlord of a Brooklyn building pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in connection with a fire. The 2010 fire occurred at an apartment building on 86th Street in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Someone apparently doused a roll of toilet paper in paint thinner and lit the roll. Five immigrants from Guatemala tragically died in the building fire and 16 other individuals suffered injuries.

The severity of the building fire was compounded by the fact that several of the victims in the building were trapped in illegally divided apartments. After the fire subsided, inspectors learned that unauthorized partitions and locked doors had been used to create six separate apartments. These illegal apartments held 9 tenants on the second floor and 10 on the third floor. Fire officials reported that if the building had been up to code then they would have been able to put out the fire in less than an hour. Instead, it took firefighters about three hours to put out the fire and break down illegal partitions.

According to authorities, the worker and two other men had been installing a staircase in a basement apartment that was under renovation in Huntington Station. The workers had built two retaining walls for an outside entrance. When they were in the process of installing steps for the staircase, one of the retaining walls unexpectedly fell and killed one of the workers. Emergency personnel responding to the scene pronounced the man dead at the construction site. Fortunately, the other construction workers did not suffer any injuries.

No matter how careful one is on the road, there is always the risk that another driver on the road will act negligently or recklessly and cause a car accident. It bears repeating the obvious: cars, especially at high speeds, can cause serious injuries or even death.

For one reason or another, drivers often forget this concept or blatantly disregard the rules of the road. Hit-and-run drivers can be especially dangerous because they have little compassion for those injured in a car accident or little desire to follow the law. A recent hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn highlights this point. Contacting a Brooklyn personal injury attorney can help answer any questions or concerns you might have regarding your case.
